A few things about me...
I'm not sure where all
the time has gone, but according to my calendar I'm now in my third
decade here at Onondaga. During the course of these years I've enjoyed
seeing my best students transfer to and graduate from some of the finest
music schools and conservatories in the world, including the Eastman School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music.
Indeed, many of my former students currently hold positions in major symphony
orchestras (including the one right here in Syracuse) and on faculties of prominent
universities. As for myself, I
continue to keep active as a performer through recitals and chamber music
performances throughout the Central New York
area, including concerts with the renowned Cassatt String Quartet and the Society for New Music.
I am also an award-winning classical music reviewer. During my time at The Syracuse Post-Standard
I’ve earned eight Syracuse Press
Club awards, winning first-place (“Best in Category") awards in the
categories of Critiques, Best Human Interest Story, and the
prestigious Robert Haggart Memorial Award for Best Daily Newspaper Column.
On May 9th this year I was once again awarded the Syracuse Press
Club's "Best-in-Category Award" for Critiques for
print media for a SSO
review I wrote in 2008. Please feel free to
take a look at my most recent classical music reviews of the Skaneateles
Music Festival, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and Syracuse Opera via the
links provided on the left-most window of this page. This summer I will be reviewing the
Skaneateles Music Festival concerts on my cnycafemomus.com classical music blog.
Beyond my live music activities I write
liner notes for classical CD recordings and compose program notes for a
variety of performing organizations, including the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and
chamber ensembles such as the EastWind
Trio d'Anches (for whom I wrote the program notes for its recent Carnegie
Hall appearance). And yes, Virginia – I do have a
life outside of music, such as Labor relations activities at the college
where I serve as Grievance Officer
for the Onondaga Community College
Federation of Teachers and Administrators (OCCFTA). I also serve as
Treasurer for the Society for New Music, and as a tax accountant specializing
in income tax returns for performing artists.
Whatever time may be left in the day I’m happy to devote to two great
passions: chess (which
consumes far too much of my time), and Mozart
operas (for which there will never be sufficient time). I live in Camillus with my wife, Cheryl, and our
incorrigible miniature schnauzer, Teddy,
shown here this Christmas posing as a four-legged Santa, and again this past
Halloween cast as a Lady bug.
